This is a record number for our club. They have begun to register on the www.icoo.com website. When all 15 complete registration, this will bring our total number of campers sent the last 19 years to 147.

February 17 is President’s Day, it is our hope to get our newly purchased flags installed on the project flag poles in their honor by then.

IWF – Indiana Wildlife Federation is monitoring state legislative bills in the Indiana House and Senate while they are in session. There are several new bills presented that deal with hunting, fishing, conservation etc. One particularly was a concern of theirs, Senate Bill – SB 32 Chronic Wasting Disease -CWD that was being heard by committee, which proposes a controversial pilot program aimed at combating CWD, They are urging a NO vote. They sent out a letter to affiliate clubs to sign on to that help their position. It reads:

While the bill may appear to present a solution to the growing issues related to CWD in Indiana, this path forward presents significant risks to Indiana wildlife, compromises the state’s ability to manage wildlife , and would constitute a substantial financial burden to the IDNR. The best available science suggest that breeding “genetically resistant” deer in captivity is likely to take decades, if it is possible at all. Further, if the development of “genetically resistant” deer does become a biological reality, it does not present a feasible management solution for mitigating the impacts of CWD in wild deer. For that to be the case, wild deer would have to be eliminated and replace with these supposedly- genetically-superior captive raised deer, at significant expense to the state. Further, there is no evidence that these “genetically resistant” deer would not carry and spread CWD to other deer in the wild.

The bill compromises the robust rural economy that is rooted in wild deer hunting in Indiana, as well as professional wildlife management in the state. We support the existing authority that the DNR exercises to manage CWD.

Lastly the bill’s provisions for immediate stocking of deer alongside the pilot program suggest conclusions were drawn prematurely, without sufficient research or consideration of the long term effects.

We respectfully ask that you vote NO on SB . signed by: National Deer Association, Indiana Wildlife Federation.

NACC members at last months meeting voted to sign on with the IWF. It was last reported SB 32 was not moved out of committee.
Note: The first case of Chronic Wasting Disease was detected in northern Indiana in April 2024 . More info posted at club house.
