DNR –  Meltzer Woods – designated a National Natural Landmark in 1974.   Meltzer Woods is located in Shelby County off I-74 Exit 116 on County Rd. 600 East.  It has a 1.2 mile walking trail that gives you a glimpse of what Indiana landscape looked like before European settlers cleared much of Shelby County’s forest to make way for farms and settlements.  Approaching you see a dense bunch of trees springing up out of a surrounding cornfield,  these are the same white oaks, shagbark hickories, and ash trees the pioneers seen in 1816.  A few of the oldest  pre-date the Pilgrims’ first landing of Plymouth Rock in 1620.  This 48 acre tract has never been cut since 1857 when the Meltzer’s became owners , even though his grandson operated a sawmill.  by Scott Roberts, OI staff, Outdoor Indiana
