April 22 is Earth Day –  There are a multitude of things that one can do to celebrate this day.  And many of you are doing it on a daily basis through out the year…… Recycle, build habitat, keep our streams clean, to name a couple, along with educating those around you.

National Arbor Day is April 24 – This year they are celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Arbor Day.  Arbor Day began with one person, and one idea, in a small town on the Nebraska prairie.  J. Sterling Morton was an early settler to Nebraska Territory,  In 1855, he purchased a large plot of land in Nebraska City, where he settled with his family.  Nebraska had few trees. Without them, settlers lacked windbreaks, fuel, building materials, and shade from the hot sun.  Morton was passionate about planting trees on his own property, and eventually, lobbied the state to create a holiday.  The first Arbor Day celebration was held in Nebraska on April 10, 1872.

NACC Tree Seedling Order arrived on April 4 and were distributed to those members who ordered them.  We would like to thank Rita Seig, wife of  NACC past president, Rob Seig for her contribution of picking our order up from the Vallonia State Nursery.   Members should be proud of our club’s support of tree planting each year as we had crossed over the 50,000 tree distribution many years back.
